After a 10-year hiatus since Season 2 in 2016, the Galle Fort Premier League (FPL) Season 3 made a triumphant return on August 1, 2026, at the historic Galle Fort Law Square. Organized by the Galle Muslim Cultural Association in collaboration with the Galle Fort Youth and sponsored by the Riaz Ismail Scholarship Fund along with the Faika and Hamdoon Endowment for the Restoration of Sight and afi cares, the tournament aimed to uplift community skills, foster inclusivity, and reconnect the Galle Fort community living outside Colombo or overseas.

One of the most exciting new additions to Season 3 was the introduction of a virtual wallet-based player auction system. The participating teams were given a virtual budget that they could strategically manage while bidding for players ahead of the tournament. This added an entirely new dimension to the competition as it required the team managers to balance their spending while securing players who could strengthen their squad much like the Indian Premier League (IPL). It allowed for teamwork, strategic thinking, and engagement among players and supporters. This made the tournament experience more interactive from the very beginning.

At the heart of the Galle Fort Premier League was its ability to bring people together through sport. Players from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds took part in the tournament, reflecting the longstanding multicultural community at Galle Fort. They transformed the tournament from a simple sporting competition to a space for connection, friendship, and mutual understanding. Therefore, the Galle Premier League reinforced inclusivity, unity, and community spirit amongst the Galle Fort community.

Adding to the scale and excitement of the tournament, the entire day of matches was broadcasted live on SLT PEO TV Sports. This allowed for audiences beyond the grounds of Galle Fort to join into the action, follow the progress of the cricket tournament, and be connected to the event. The broadcast also elevated the profile of the Galle Fort Premier League, showing the energy, talent, and community spirit of Galle to the world!

As a particular nostalgic moment of the third season of the Premier League, a legendary exhibition match featuring two teams led by senior residents of Galle was played. This brought together members who had witnessed and contributed to the community’s sporting culture over the years. Therefore, this exhibition went beyond a simple match and instead became a bridge between generations. It allowed longtime residents and younger participants to share memories of Galle Fort’s Premier League past.

A meaningful feature of this season’s Premier League was the decision to name all eight participating teams after historic Galle Fort streets as follows:

5.          Pedlar Warriors

6.          New Lane Falcons

7.          Parawa Challenges

8.          Rampart Royals

In a nail-biting final match, the Pedlar Warriors emerged victorious against the Chando Vikings, capping off a memorable day of sportsmanship, nostalgia, and community bonding.

Ultimately, the tournament was a celebration of sports, heritage, unity, and inclusivity. It reconnected members of the Galle Fort community and allowed for the community living in Colombo and overseas to join into the community events while creating new memories for the younger generation.
