Information Communication Technology (ICT) refers to “various tools and platforms that facilitate the exchange of information among individuals and groups” (UNESCO, 2022). ICT is similar to Information Technology (IT) but does not focus on communication technologies. In the present digital age, education in information technology is vital for students as it is widely applied in learning spaces, working spaces, and in general day-to-day life activities. Therefore, equipping students with ICT knowledge and skills is essential to enable them to participate effectively in an increasingly digital society.
The importance of IT education is multifaceted but can be mainly discussed thanks to its:
- Contribution to students’ employability and preparedness for the labour market;
- Ability to enhance the quality of learning;
- Improved accessibility to education;
- Importance in aiding independent research and education;
- Ability to collaborate with one another;
- Promotion of digital inclusion.
One of the main reasons why ICT education is important for students is due to its contribution to students’ employability and preparedness for the labour market. As organisations implement digital technologies in their operations, employees are expected to possess basic digital competencies alongside occupation-specific knowledge and skills. ICT education can therefore help students develop competencies such as digital literacy, information management, online communication, and the effective use of communication tools.
ICT education can further enhance the quality and accessibility of learning. Digital platforms, online learning resources, and educational software allow students to access information beyond what’s taught inside traditional classrooms. This can encourage students to learn and research independently, collaborate with one another, and develop problem-solving skills. It can also allow students to engage with educational content in different forms of media such as pictures, videos, quizzes, and forums for a more interactive learning experience.
It additionally plays a crucial role in promoting digital inclusion. As government services, financial services, employment opportunities, and other essential activities develop online platforms, it is important to have adequate digital skills to access these opportunities equally. By providing students with ICT education at an early stage, we can therefore contribute to reducing digital disparities and enabling students from different backgrounds to participate more efficiently in education, work, and society.
We, as educators, therefore, have an important responsibility to ensure that students have adequate access to computers, digital skills learning opportunities along with opportunities to apply ICT skills. This requires moving beyond the teaching of basic theoretical concepts and incorporating practical, student-centred activities that allow learners to use digital technologies to research, communicate, collaborate, create, and solve problems. By integrating ICT effectively into education, we can help students develop the confidence and competencies required to navigate an increasingly digital world and prepare them for the evolving demands of higher education, employment, and everyday life.
